What made you decide to run for office?
Whatever your answer, consider what values you hold that supported your decision to become an elected official. Those values are your North star. Your values influence your vision for your community’s future, the organizations and agencies that support it, and affect residents and businesses in profound ways.
Now that you are IN office, it’s time to understand how to put those values to work and provide effective leadership. This post delves into how you can tune into your leadership identity to make decisions that benefit both current and future residents, even in the face of opposition from vocal constituencies.
Identifying Your Leadership Identity
Your leadership identity reflects what you value most. It’s essential to have a clear understanding of what those values are and what they mean to you. Take time to introspect and define these values. For example, are you driven by community welfare, transparency, sustainability, or innovation? While difficult, narrow your list to 3-5 core values. Write them down.
Aligning Vision with Values
Your vision for the community should be a direct extension of your values. Articulate this vision clearly to your constituents and team. When your vision is rooted in your core values, it resonates more deeply and garners greater support. It provides others understanding of your perspective. Additionally, take time to recognize your colleagues’ and community’s values. What matters most to them? This will serve you well when it comes to making tough decisions.
Making Tough Decisions
Sometimes decision-makers are at odds with each other; sometimes there is a vocal group who oppose your decisions. In those instances, rely on your values to guide your choices. Understanding what values are in conflict can help focus debate and discussion, rather than devolving into personal attacks or defensiveness. When presenting decisions, especially controversial ones, frame them in the context of your values. This helps colleagues and constituents understand the ‘why’ behind your choices, building trust and respect even among those who may disagree.
Your tenure as a local government official will be marked by numerous decisions, some easy and some difficult. By consistently aligning your decisions with your core values, you will become more comfortable and confident in your decision-making. Leading with values and integrity will have a lasting and meaningful impact on your community.
