Nathan Vanzeyl
Project Manager
Nathan brings a foundational belief to Shockey Consulting: that every place deserves great planning. His approach extends beyond conventional planning issues to the entire public realm, grounded in the conviction that, with the right vision, any place can evoke the same sense of wonder as the best-designed spaces in the world.
That belief traces back to childhood, when a visit to a theme park sparked a realization that has shaped his entire career: someone had thoughtfully planned every inch of that magical space, down to the last detail. That moment set him on a path toward planning long before he had a name for it. By high school, he was already shadowing municipal governments across the St. Louis area. During his time at community college, he became active in the St. Louis chapter of the American Planning Association and focused his coursework on planning issues.
Nathan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning & Design, with a minor in Entrepreneurship, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he received the Undergraduate Research Fellow Distinction for his contributions to a range of planning research projects. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and earned the Dean’s Distinguished Student Award. He also holds an Associate’s degree concentrated on Political Science from St. Louis Community College. Before joining Shockey, he collaborated on a variety of comprehensive plans across Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa. He also has experience in site planning, mapping, historic preservation, planning law, and academic research.
Outside of work, Nathan can be found rock climbing, journaling, cooking, or reading a good book
