Mike Scanlon
Management Consultant
Mike Scanlon is a consultant in our Management Consulting Business. He has 35 years of experience in a diverse set of communities ranging from town-and-gown Columbia, Missouri, to Kansas City, Missouri, to the suburban cities of Merriam and Mission in Johnson County, Kansas, to the mountain resort community of Basalt, Colorado. Recently he retired as the city manager of Osawatomie, Kansas, and launched his consultancy Our City Planning LLC.
Mike serves on the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka (FHLBTopeka), which serves Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado. He’s most recently been a member of the International City/County Management Association’s (ICMAs) Sustainability Committee; has hosted International city managers from Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia. He’s also participated in U.S. State Department international exchanges with Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
Mike is a frequent contributor to the Kansas Government Journal and ICMA Magazine, and he is often invited to speak to local foundations and local government associations on issues of collaboration and goal setting.
Mike is a graduate of the University of Missouri and attended the John F. Kennedy School’s Senior Executives in Local Government Program as well as the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Mike’s passion about serving residents and communities is fueled by the closing line of the Athenian Oath… “We will transmit this city not only not less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”
